Volcanoes are strong and unpredictable. Scientists study them to try to establish when they will erupt – but most eruptions can’t be predicted and are devastating.
Most volcanoes are found in areas where continental plates meet. The west coast of South America, Mexico and California – as well as the east coast of Asia – englobe plate boundaries.
That’s why this region is called “The Ring of Fire”. The friction between the plates melts the rocks and transforms them into magma, that erupts through the volcano.
Volcanoes are dangerous – but they show the fascinating power of nature.
