Have you found the love of your life? Do you celebrate Love every year? Well, in the USA and in many countries around the world, Valentine’s Day is celebrated every February 14.
Do you know who Saint Valentine was? He was a priest who worked near Rome around the year 270 AD. By that time, religious persecution was an issue in Europe.
It’s believed that Roman Emperor Claudius II prohibited his soldiers to get married because he wanted to grow his army and believed married men were not good soldiers.
Saint Valentine would help these soldiers – and other Christians – escape religious persecution as well as provide them the ‘sacraments’. Marriage was one of them.
The modern Valentine’s Day customs were developed in England and spread in the 19th century throughout the world. Sending cards, chocolate and flowers to the one you love turned out to be so popular that, in the early 19th century, cards stopped being handmade and started to be assembled in factories.
