Port wine is one of the most famous kinds of wine in the world. It has a peculiar taste that results from special factors such as the region where the grape is grown and the kind of manufacturing process.
The grapes used to produce this wine are only planted in Douro Valley, in northern Portugal. The soil there is wet and rich in nutrients.
The process for producing this wine is unique. Pure sugar cane rum is added to stop the fermentation while there is still some sugar from the grape. That’s why Port wine is so sweet.
However, be careful! As sugar cane rum is added, this wine is stronger than the others and may contain from 19 to 22% of alcohol.
Our Enjoy Student Michael Gelsleichter lived in Portugal and learned about Porto Wine there. Thank you Michael for sharing it with us.
