      Phytoplankton, or microalgae, are microscopic organisms that live in both salty and fresh water.

      They are the basis of the aquatic food web, feeding from microscopic animals to giant whales.

      Phytoplankton are very important for the environment.

      They survive through photosynthesis, consuming carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen on a scale equivalent to forests.

      And if you go to the beach in the evening, you will see its beautiful light. Phytoplankton glows in the dark!
