A- A A+

Do you know the Catarinense city that grew the most in terms of population in the past five years?

New Italy was the first Italian colony in Brazil. It got its political emancipation from other municipalities 58 years ago, on July 19. After Araquari, it’s the Catarinense city that grew the most in terms of population during the past five years. Today it’s population is around 32,260 people.

The town is small but has modern initiatives. It was one of the first cities to have a pioneering experience: during the elections of 2008, it used the biometric ballot, where the voter can be identified by their fingerprints.

New Italy also stands out for the production of footwear and is considered the fourth footwear industrial center in Brazil. A state law officially named it ‘Capital Catarinense do Calçado’.

The town, just like it´s people, is very welcoming. Nowadays New Italy is called São João Batista.
